HEALTHCARE QUALITY CERTIFICATION:
CAHQ’S COMMITMENT

CAHQ has been actively involved in promoting certification for healthcare quality professionals since 1987. We believe that the study, examination, and ongoing certification process significantly strengthens the expertise and influence of the quality professional within the healthcare organization and positively impacts our ultimate goal of improved quality of patient care. Because of CAHQ's commitment, as of May 5, 2008, California had 895 active CPHQs, more than twice the number of any other state and representing 13.3% of the total of 6,729.

The Certified Professional in Healthcare Quality

The Certified Professional in Healthcare Quality (CPHQ) designation requires, first, successful completion of what has become an international examination under the auspices of the Healthcare Quality Certification Board, and then ongoing maintenance of CPHQ status through continuing education. The CPHQ Examination is now offered on an ongoing basis at 10 computerized testing sites in California. See www.cphq.org for further Exam information.

CPHQ Exam Preparation

In partnership with Janet Brown, CAHQ sponsors the Healthcare Quality Overview and Certification Workshop three times a year—in February, July, and October. This two-day intensive Workshop provides current, principle-based information for quality professionals in all settings who are seeking an integrated overview of the field, studying for certification, or recertifying. 14 hours of continuing education credit are provided. Since 1987 Janet has taught >45 Workshops with CAHQ and >95 internationally.

Background

The concept of providing a Workshop for those seeking to be CPHQs began with CAHQ members in 1985.  Janet Brown had taken the first exam offered in 1984.  Jan Maronde and 11 other California colleagues asked Janet to facilitate a study session the next year; all of them passed.  Jan Maronde subsequently became a member of the Healthcare Quality Certification Board (HQCB) and then its chair for two years.  She became the HQCB's first Executive Director in 1989, serving through 2003.

Janet's initial 50 pages of "helpful study materials" have grown into the 900-page, eight-chapter, annually revised Healthcare Quality Handbook: A Professional Resource and Study Guide.   The Handbook is the text for the Healthcare Quality Overview and Certification Workshops .
